Profits from the sale of the book will donated to Reflections Art in Health, an arts in health charity founded by my wife Angie and I. The charity is dedicated to showcasing the creative talents of people with health problems generally, and mental health problems more specifically. It also demonstrates the value of the arts in aiding recovery and enhancing the healing environment.I myself, have personal experience of mental health issues: After having a breakdown, I decided I wanted to do everything I could to ensure people diagnosed with a mental health problem received the best treatment possible. It soon became obvious if I wanted to affect change I would have to sit at the same table as the decision makers to improve the delivery of mental health services, and so began my first encounters with politicians. In writing Commons People, I am hoping that I can create a better understanding of the people that make the decisions that affect all of our lives, and encourage the British public to take a much greater interest in the work of our elected representatives. Commons People demonstrates that MPs are human too, sharing the same hopes and dreams as the rest of us. It finds out what they feel about ordinary everyday issues, allowing us to be able to relate to them more. We would all do well to remember we get the politicians we deserve, and if we want to keep them on their toes and truly representative of the electorate, we probably need to be far more demanding of them, and take much more of an interest in their activities.PUBLICATION DATE 1st March 2013ISBN: 9781780884752 Price: £9.95
